Gradian Health Systems Announces the Launch of Gradian Institute
A new centre for training, knowledge, and digital innovation in anaesthesia and critical care across resource-limited settings
Five billion people worldwide lack access to safe surgical and anaesthesia care. Seventy-seven percent of them live in Africa and Southeast Asia, the regions where Gradian Health Systems has worked for over a decade to close the gap between what patients need and what health systems can deliver. Equipment has always been central to that mission, but over the years our work across over 40 countries has made one thing clear: devices alone are not enough. Building lasting, safe anaesthesia and critical care systems requires trained providers, locally relevant knowledge, and tools designed for the environments where care happens.
Today, we are proud to announce the launch of Gradian Institute, led by Executive Director Magdalena Mwalimo. It is a dedicated centre that brings together training, research, and digital innovation in service of the clinicians and patients who need it most.
Why Gradian Institute, and Why Now
The gaps in global anaesthesia are well documented. Across sub-Saharan Africa, there is fewer than one anaesthesia provider for every 100,000 people. Clinical evidence generated in low-resource settings rarely reaches global journals or informs local practice. Digital tools developed in high-income countries also routinely fail when they meet the realities of low-bandwidth, off-grid clinical environments.
Gradian Institute is our response. It is not built from scratch but built on a decade of operational proof: more than 12,000 clinicians trained, 250+ trainers across Africa and Asia, and a network of over 300 biomedical engineers and technicians. The Institute formalises what Gradian has always done and creates the structure to scale it.
Three Pillars
Capacity Building | Bring together innovations and knowledge under the Gradian Institute to tailor best-fit capacity building opportunities for pre- and in-service clinicians, minimising practice gaps for anaesthesia and critical care.
Knowledge Generation | Leverage Gradian Health Systems’ presence in over 40 countries to conduct rapid data collection, rigorous open-access research, and high-value clinical insights around patient outcomes, provider practice, and product performance.
Digital Innovation | Amplify the reach of high-fidelity, brick-and-mortar simulation by developing and delivering a suite of next-gen tools — including artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) — for low-bandwidth, high-value skill-building at the point of care.
What Comes Next — An Invitation to Founding Partners
Building on a decade of operational proof at Gradian Health Systems, Gradian Institute is founded on partnership. We are actively seeking founding partners across four tracks:
