World Health Assembly Passes Item on Surgery and Anaesthesia!

In May, the World Health Assembly Executive Board unanimously passed an agenda item on surgery and anaesthesia! This is a significant step for global surgery and anaesthesia, as it will catalyze interest, raise awareness, and allow the item to be considered as a resolution at the 68th World Health Assembly, held in May 2015. You can read the agenda item here.

UAMs Installed at Training Centers Across Ethiopia

Much of the Gradian team recently returned from a two-week trip to Ethiopia, where they assisted with the installation of UAMs throughout the country.

The UAMs were purchased by the American NGO JHPIEGO as part of its five-year Human Resources for Health program, funded by USAID.

In consultation and coordination with the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health, the UAMs were installed at 14 training centers throughout the country, where they will be used to train thousands of nurse anesthetists in the provision of safe anaesthesia.

Two Journal Articles Recently Published on the UAM

Two articles on the UAM were recently published by the Austere Anesthesia Health Outcomes Research Group of Johns Hopkins. Both investigate the use of techniques designed to engage local staff in identifying real or potential breakdowns in processes and work systems at hospitals. Read the abstracts here.
